Mesquite is hard to the point of being brittle and it is full of checks and cracks and also insect damage and holes from different types of wood ants & bugs that lay their eggs in the wood. Those imperfections add character and uniqueness to them.
Hand wash your wood spoons in warm soapy water, rinse and wipe dry. We never leave our spoons in a sink full of water or wash in dish washer and they will last for a long time. The longer you use them the darker they will get.
After you use them and wash them a time or two, especially when they are new, they might look and feel a little fuzzy from the wood grain raising up. Just rub them lightly with either "000" "0000" steel wool ( in the paint section) or 220 or finer sandpaper and then rub them with oil. You usually only have to do this once or twice and then rarely after that.
The wood Spoons and Spatulas used to scrape the bottom of pans will from time to time need a little sand paper to maintain their sharp edge.
Originally I oil my spoons with Sesame Oil and then I bake on a coat of Organic Bees wax (picture at left). As you use them occasionally re-oil them with any food safe oil from vegetable oil to food grade mineral spirits. I will re-oil all the ones we use at home about once a month usually when I am about to fry something and have some clean cooking oil heating up on the stove.
I number each one and keep track of who has it. The first number is the order I made it and second is the year. So if you had a spoon with 98/17 that is the 98th spoon I made and it was done in 2017.
Thanks and enjoy! Laura and Dan.
